BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Distance runner Hannah Meier of the University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the final day of the NCAA Indoor Championships and the Wolverines' indoor season with second team All-America honors on Saturday (March 9).
Meier finished 11th overall in the mile final in 4:45.80, joining her twin sister Haley from 2018 as both a Big Ten champion and a second team All-American.
The 11-woman race was tightly bunched for much of the duration of the competition, with the entire field separated by less than a second with two laps to go. Meier had been hovering in the back half of the pack for the first six laps, but the leaders made a move that she was unable to respond to with 400 meters to go and she lost contact with the pack as a result.
Saturday's performance put a cap on a historic indoor season that saw her win the Big Ten title and set the school record on her home track, as well as anchor the fastest distance medley relay team in Big Ten Conference history.
Michigan finished with a final team score of three points, by way of a sixth-place finish in Friday's distance medley relay by Alice Hill, Chloe Foster, Aurora Rynda and Meg Darmofal.
With the 2019 indoor season now complete, the Wolverines' focus will turn to the outdoor campaign set to begin at the Miami (Fla.) Hurricane Invitational next Friday and Saturday (March 15-16). Only select student-athletes will compete, with the full team -- including those who competed this weekend -- expected to make its spring debut by later in the month.
