TUCSON, Arizona -- With three Wolverine starters among the top 50, the University of Michigan women's golf team used a final-round team total of 307 Tuesday (March 12) to post a 928 54-hole total and finished 12th at Arizona's Wildcat Invitational played at the Sewailo Golf Club.
After spending the week prior training in Scottsdale as part of an eight-day spring break trip, the Wolverines headed to nearby Tucson to close the trip at Arizona's spring event. The Maize and Blue had a promising start using a pair of 74s (+2) from freshman Ashley Lau and senior Elodie Van Dievoet to give U-M an opening 303 total in Monday's first 18 holes.
As temperatures dropped and the winds picked up for the second round, scores across the 17-team field were dramatically affected as U-M grinded through to tally a 318, paced by a 77 from junior Hannah Ghelfi. With a 621 total, the Wolverines found themselves in 13th place after the first day of play.
Returning for Tuesday's final round, intermittent rains and winds were present, but the field was able to guide its way through it. Led by a 73 (+1) from Van Dievoet and 76s from Lau and Ghelfi, U-M closed with a 307 helping post a 928 tally. With just eight shots separating positions 10-15, the Maize and Blue ended up in the middle with a 12th place finish.
"It was a tough weekend of weather in Tucson, believe it or not," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The course setup was difficult, but the wind and cold made it quite a test. As a team, in general, we handled the ball striking OK, but really struggled with our short game. Our big numbers took a big toll in the long run.
"Elodie's final round of 73 was pretty classy today. She controlled her ball in the wind and capitalized on her birdie opportunities. Ashley (Lau) was also very consistent all weekend in these conditions, and deserves credit for staying patient all week."
For the second time in eight events, newcomer Lau led the Maize and Blue as she tied for 33rd with a 229 (74-79-76) total. Lau has now finished among the top 50 in all seven of her stroke play events. After a season-best performance at U-M's last spring event -- the Westbrook Spring Invitational -- Van Dievoet rebounded from her second-round 83 with her final-round 73 to tie for 37th at 230 (74-83-73).
Ghelfi rounded out U-M's top three as she tied for 42nd at 232 (79-77-76) to give Michigan a trio among the top 50. Playing as an individual, freshman Sophia Trombetta gave the Maize and Blue four among the top 50 as she also tied for 42nd with a 232 (77-77-78) total.
"As a team, we had a productive week of practice for our spring training," said Dowling. "We are anxious to get back to Ann Arbor and get ready for the Bryan Park."
Returning to Ann Arbor a few weeks, the Wolverines continue the season's slate heading to Greensboro, North Carolina, for Wake Forest and UNC Greensboro's Bryan National Collegiate, Friday through Sunday, March 29-31, at the Bryan Park Golf Course. U-M, which will make its fourth straight appearance, finished 10th last year with a 910 three-day total.
