Maize and Blue Shuts Out Baylor to Close Out Homestand

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team took advantage of a four-member Baylor lineup, shutting out the Bears, 7-0, on Friday evening (March 1) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan started the match with a 2-0 advantage due to Baylor forfeits at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions.
U-M needed to win just one doubles match to clinch the first point of the match, with sophomore Bella Lorenzini and freshman Anca Craciun obliging. The duo raced to a 6-0 win at No. 2, clinching the doubles point in 20 minutes for the Maize and Blue.
Junior Lera Patiuk made the most of her first dual-match action of the year, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4.
Craciun followed moments later with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 for U-M's fifth point of the evening. Craciun won the final nine games of the match, turning a 3-3 first-set tie into a straight-set win.
Senior Brienne Minor came through with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 to put Michigan's sixth point on the scoreboard. Minor was in a 4-2 hole in the first before ripping off five of the next six games to take the first. Minor raced out to a 5-0 lead in the second en route to the 6-3 win.
Junior Chiara Lommer kept the Maize and Blue perfect on the evening in her first career action at the No. 1 position, grabbing a 6-4, 6-2 win. Lommer went up a break early in the second at 3-1 and never looked back, giving Michigan the shutout win.
Michigan heads outside for the first time this season, traveling to Orlando, Florida, to train at the USTA National Campus for several days before facing Duke on March 9 at noon.
