NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off its two-day road trip to the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge on Friday (Feb. 8) with six top-10 finishes.
Weight throwers Kayla Deering and Bailey Baker continued their breakthrough seasons with top-eight finishes in a top-tier weight throw field, while the distance crew posted a pair of top-six finishes at 5,000 meters.
Co-school-record holders Deering and Baker finished seventh and eighth overall, respectively, as they combined for the first time in Michigan history a pair of teammates went 19.30m (63 feet, 4 inches) or farther.
Deering went 19.31m (63-4.25) and Baker threw 19.30m (63-4) -- both in the second round.
The Wolverine women had a strong showing in the 5,000-meter run as Kathryn House went 16:30.85 for fourth and Anna West followed in 16:36.46 to take sixth. House's performance moved her up to No. 16 in school history for the distance.
Tuning up for a potential school-record attempt in the 4x400 relay on Saturday, Jade Harrison clocked 24.36 over 200 meters for seventh overall. She will be back Saturday at 4:55 p.m. CST as she, Chloe Foster, Aurora Rynda and Julia Hall will attempt to lower the Michigan record of 3:37.88 from last year's Big Ten Indoor Championships.
The other indoor relay -- the distance medley -- accounted for the last top-10 finish of the night, as the quartet of Lauren Biggs, Jenna Reid, Faith Reynolds and Jena Metwalli went 11:35.76 for second place. Michigan's "A" team in the event is expected to debut at next weekend's Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame.
Saturday's second day of action at Vanderbilt will begin at 10:30 a.m. CST with Jessica Mercier chasing the Michigan freshman record in the pole vault. Track events for the Wolverines begin at 1 p.m. CST with the 60-meter hurdles prelims, and the schedule includes former Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week Rynda at 800 meters, Hannah Meier in the mile and Camille Davre and Anne Forsyth at 3,000 meters, as well as the 4x400 record attempt.
