• Kornacki: Moyle Scores Two Critical Goals in Comeback Win over Buckeyes
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team came from behind thanks to two goals by freshman forward Nolan Moyle to defeat No. 6-ranked Ohio State, 4-2, Friday night (Feb. 22) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena. The game was the first of the Wolverines' last regular-season homestand.
U-M and the Buckeyes headed to the first intermission scoreless despite solid chances by both teams. Michigan's best chance came with three minutes left in the opening frame when sophomore forward Jack Becker intercepted an errant Ohio State pass and drove to the net, but sent the puck slightly wide.
OSU's Mason Jobst opened the scoring at 4:56 of the second period putting a backhander past an outstretched Strauss Mann to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore alternate captain Jake Slaker nearly tied the game for the Wolverines with 6:23 left in the second period after collecting a cross-ice pass from freshman forward Jimmy Lambert, but Slaker sent the puck into the glove of Ohio State goaltender Sean Romeo.
Sophomore defenseman Quinn Hughes knotted the game at 1 at 19:58 of the second period, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play. Hughes rifled the puck from the left dot past Romeo off a pass from blue-line partner senior Joseph Cecconi, with junior forward Will Lockwood also getting an assist on the goal.
The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead at 5:45 of the third period after cleaning up a rebound in front of the net and putting it past Mann.
Moyle tied the game at 2 with his first of two on the night after cleaning up classmate Garrett Van Wyhe's wraparound attempt at the left side of the net at 9:30 of the third period. Hughes also picked up his team-leading 31st assist of the season on the goal.
The Wolverines took their first lead of the game when Moyle put the puck into the back of the net at 16:49 of the third period. Freshman forward Garrett Van Wyhe sent the puck on his backhand across the crease where Moyle tapped it in past OSU's netminder. Sophomore forward Dakota Raabe tallied his eighth assist of the season with the secondary.
"I think playing together for a while has chemistry and we found it today," Van Wyhe said after the game about connecting on Moyle's goals.
Senior defenseman Nicholas Boka saucered a pass through the middle of the offensive zone to Lambert, who was at the bottom of the left circle where he one-timed it into the back of the net to give U-M a 4-2 lead at 18:50 of the third period. Freshman defenseman Jack Summers also picked up an assist on the goal.
"We found a way to seal the deal," head coach Mel Pearson said. "That's a big goal there by Jimmy Lambert. We continued to play to the end."
Mann finished the night with 29 saves while Ohio State's Romeo made 21 stops.
Michigan went 1-for-5 on the power play and held the Buckeyes scoreless on their four power-play opportunities on the night.
The Wolverines and Buckeyes will meet again Saturday night (Feb. 23) at 6 p.m. in Michigan's final regular-season home game. The game is a Maize Out and U-M's three seniors – Boka, Cecconi and Brendan Warren -- will be recognized after the game on Senior Night.
