MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Seventeen members of the University of Michigan swimming and diving program suited up for a long-course time trial on the final day of the Minnesota Invite, held Sunday (Dec. 8) at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
For American swimmers, the time trial served as an opportunity to get qualifying times for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in June. For the international swimmers, it was a chance to refine races in a long-course pool.
Additionally, tacking on another day of racing after a four-day meet simulates the quick turnaround that some of these swimmers will face following the conclusion of the collegiate season in March. For example, sophomore Maggie MacNeil, the reigning world champion in the 100-meter butterfly, will attempt to qualify for the 2020 Olympics at Canadian Trials, which will begin just nine days after the NCAA season ends.
In addition to MacNeil, the swimmers competing Sunday included Charlie Swanson, Danny Berlitz, Alexis Margett, Miles Smachlo, River Wright, Felix Auböck, Miranda Tucker, Patrick Callan, Donald Scott, Kate Krolikowski, Mariella Venter, Tommy Cope, Luiz Gustavo Borges, AJ Bornstein, Jeremy Babinet and Jared Daigle.
Six swimmers met U.S. Olympic Trials standards, though all previously had already qualified: Swanson in the 400-meter individual medley (4:25.30), Smachlo in the 100-meter butterfly (52.55), Callan in the 200-meter freestyle (1:49.28), Cope in the 200-meter IM (2:02.77) and Bornstein in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:16.01) on the men's side and Tucker in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.27) for the women.
Among international swimmers, MacNeil (Canada) made the FINA 'A' cut in the 100-meter butterfly (57.26), while Auböck (Austria) made the FINA 'B' cut in the 400-meter freestyle (3:52.44). Auböck has already qualified for next summer's Olympics.
The next combined competition for the Wolverines comes on Jan. 11 when they face Indiana at Canham Natatorium. That meet will begin at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
