MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Historic performances from sophomore Patrick Callan and a trio of breaststrokers highlighted the efforts of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team at the Minnesota Invite on Friday (Dec. 6) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. After three days, U-M moved into second place (542.5 points), leading California by 13.5 points. Texas leads the meet (816 points).
Coming into this week, only three men in school history had cracked 52 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke: Richard Funk (51.41 in 2015), Bruno Ortiz (51.68 in 2015) and Jacob Montague (51.80 in 2018). On Friday, that list grew to five, as both senior Jeremy Babinet and sophomore Will Chan broke the barrier. Babinet finished third in 51.63, surpassing Ortiz for second in school history while also officially punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the spring. Chan seems likely to join him after finishing fifth in 51.91, now the fifth-best time in school history. Also shedding time was senior Tommy Cope, who went from ninth on the list (53.12 from 2018) to sixth (52.54) after finishing sixth in the final on Friday.
Callan came into the week ranked sixth in school history in the 200-yard freestyle, but vaulted all the way up to second on Friday, culminating in a runner-up finish in finals (1:32.91). Callan became the fourth man in program history to break 1:33.00 in the event, leapfrogging Olympians Tyler Clary (1:33.10) and Peter Vanderkaay (1:33.31) with his finals swim. Junior Luiz Gustavo Borges took nine seconds off his seed time and joined Callan in the final, taking eighth (1:34.44 in preliminaries).
Michigan brought back four diving finalists for the second consecutive day. Junior Ross Todd, who snuck into the final in eighth following preliminaries, bounced back to win the one-meter springboard competition, posting a score of 317.30. Senior Jake Herremans was right behind him in second (316.10), while freshman Kevin Bradley (seventh, 279.60) and junior Chris Canning (eighth, 278.80) rounded out the group's finalists.
The 400-yard IM saw big time drops from a pair of seniors. Cope, who took the last spot in finals out of the morning, dropped more than three-and-a-half seconds to finish fourth (3:43.05), the fifth-best time in the NCAA this season. His training mate, Charlie Swanson, took more than five seconds off his preliminaries time, clocking in 10th (3:43.82). That is the seventh-best time in the NCAA this season. Junior Will Roberts joined Cope in the final, finishing seventh, though his time in preliminaries was a personal best (3:45.49). Sophomore Jared Daigle (3:49.00 in preliminaries) and senior Felix Auböck (3:49.60 in preliminaries) also set new personal bests.
Senior Miles Smachlo earned a spot in the final of the 100-yard butterfly, finishing sixth (46.15). Freshman Andrew Trepanier, a Minnesota native, scored a few points in the consolation final (15th, 48.25).
Sophomore Eric Storms got a second swim in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 16th (48.82).
The Wolverines closed the night with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Borges, Smachlo, Swanson and freshman Cam Peel clocked in at 1:17.66, an NCAA 'B' cut. Peel anchored in 19.21.
The short-course portion of the Minnesota Invite concludes Saturday (Dec. 6) with preliminaries at 10 a.m. CST and finals at 6 p.m.
