NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team had three Wolverines in action at the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships this week (Nov. 6-8) at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Senior Giulia Pairone qualified for the event by virtue of her singles title at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. She fell in the first round of the singles main draw to Megan Davies of South Carolina (7-6, 6-2) to start the tournament. She took the first set off No. 68-ranked Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's in the first round of consolation action but dropped the next two sets (6-4, 7-5) to bow out of the tourney.
Freshman Andrea Cerdan was a wildcard entry into the singles main draw. She got a tough draw, first facing No. 8-ranked Anna Rogers from North Carolina State. Cerdan fell to Rogers (6-1, 6-1) to enter the consolation draw. She tried to rally late against No. 37 Vivian Wolff of Georgia but came up short in a 6-0, 7-5 match.
Cerdan and junior Alyvia Jones participated in the doubles main draw after winning the doubles title at the regional. The pair fell in the first round of the main draw to North Carolina State's Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami (6-4, 6-3) but advanced to the consolation quarterfinals after a walkover. The Maize and Blue could not advance past the quarters, falling to No. 2-seeded Jessie Gong and Samantha Martinelli of Yale (7-5, 6-3).
The rest of the Wolverines are in action this weekend (Nov. 8-10) at the Arizona State Thunderbird in Tempe.
