MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team could not pull off a road upset of No. 5 Minnesota as the Wolverines fell, 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 20-25), on Saturday night (Nov. 16) at Maturi Pavilion.
The Wolverine offense was paced by sophomore Paige Jones, who led all players with 13 kills, while senior Sydney Wetterstrom added 12. U-M setter MacKenzi Welsh finished with 31 assists and a season-high 17 digs, giving the senior her eighth double-double of the season.
The first set went the Golden Gophers' way, as the Wolverines fell, 25-21. Michigan jumped out to an early lead, but finished the set by hitting just .021, finishing with 12 kills and 11 errors.
Michigan (18-8, 11-5 Big Ten) fought back in the second set but ultimately came up just short in a tightly-contested 25-23 stanza. The Wolverines closed a four-point gap to tie the match at 23, but the Golden Gophers (20-4, 14-2 Big Ten) pulled out the final two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three followed a similar script as the first two, as Michigan battled tough but ultimately fell, 25-20.
The Wolverines' .080 team hitting percentage was their second lowest of the season, and the team's 30 errors were the most of the campaign. Minnesota, meanwhile, hit just .246 and did not have a single player reach double-digits in kills.
Michigan will return to action Wednesday (Nov. 20), when it returns to Big Ten play against rival Michigan State for a 7 p.m. match in East Lansing.
