ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Derick Broche and senior Jack Hallahan scored second-half goals to lift the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines have now reached the 10-win plateau for the third consecutive year, a feat last achieved from 2008-10. Hallahan became the third man in program history to record 70-plus points; his 71 points rank third best in school history, trailing Mychal Turpin (85, 2001-04) and Knox Cameron (72, 2001-04).
The Spartans got off to the brighter start, posting three shots in the opening 15 minutes. They jumped ahead in the 21st minute on a goal from Gianni Ferri, whose right-footed volley at the near post found the back of the net.
Michigan found its footing from there, recording six shots in the final 25 minutes of the half. The Wolverines nearly equalized in the 22nd minute, but a back-heeled attempt from junior Mohammed Zakyi was cleared off the line by Michigan State's Alex Shterenberg. In the 40th minute, senior Jack Hallahan sent in a high-arching shot in the 40th minute that forced Michigan State goalkeeper Hunter Morse to backpedal into his net, but he kept it in front of the line. The Spartans led, 1-0, at halftime.
The Wolverines owned the second half and got themselves level in the 60th minute. Michigan State attempted to clear its box, but the ball went straight to junior Umar Farouk Osman. Two Michigan State defenders whiffed on it, but junior Jackson Ragen did not as he touched it on ever so slightly to Broche, who was in on the keeper all alone. He calmly slotted it into the lower-left corner past Morse for the equalizer.
Michigan stayed on the front foot and earned a free-kick opportunity in the 71st minute some 30 yards out on the far side. Hallahan stepped up and curled one into the box with his left foot. Nobody got a head to it and Morse froze on his line as the ball ended up in the side netting to put Michigan ahead, 2-1.
The Wolverines got defensive under 10 minutes to play, dodging two prime Michigan State scoring chances. In the 83rd minute, Ferri unleashed a powerful shot from distance that sailed over the crossbar. The last opportunity for the visitors came in the 88th minute after a hand ball was called on Michigan dead-center just outside the box. Michael Miller stepped up to take the free kick, but shot it well over the bar. The Wolverines maintained possession in the Spartan end from there to seal it.
Freshman Owen Finnerty earned the start and played the whole match, making two comfortable saves.
With the win, U-M advances to the conference tournament semifinals for the third consecutive year. The Wolverines will play No. 13 Penn State, the tournament's No. 2 seed, on Friday (Nov. 15) at Maryland's Ludwig Field. The match will begin at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
