ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team scored early and often in an 8-2 exhibition victory over Windsor on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Arena.
Garrett Van Wyhe found the back of the net just 7:45 into the game off a rebound of a Luke Martin shot for a 1-0 Wolverines lead. After a Windsor hooking penalty with 1:39 remaining in the first period, Michigan scored a power-play goal at the 19:09 mark when a deflected shot off Johnny Beecher's right skate trickled past a sliding Jonathon Reinhart to give the U-M a 2-0 lead.
The Wolverines headed to the locker room with a 25-3 shot advantage over the Lancers in the opening 20 minutes.
Michigan did not break stride in the second period. Cam York opened the period scoring with a deflection off a slap-pass from Nick Blankenburg to put the Wolverines ahead, 3-0, at the six-minute mark.
Shortly after, Keaton Pehrson lit the lamp to give Michigan a 4-0 lead. Pehrson's goal came courtesy of the speed of Luke Morgan, who drove past the strong-side defenseman and connected with Pehrson with a cross-ice pass. Pehrson then fired a shot past the glove of Reinhart at 11:40.
Windsor's Ryan Shaw put the Lancers on the board with 7:11 left in the second period when he connected on a one-timer from the pass of teammate Mel Melconian to make it a 4-1 game.
The Maize and Blue quickly answered as Eric Ciccolini led a two-on-two charge and found York in the middle of the ice. York then pulled the puck between his legs and roofed a backhand shot for his second goal of the game for a 5-1 Michigan lead at 15:07 of the second period.
Michigan made it 6-1 on a power-play goal with 39 seconds left in period two as Jack Becker threaded a no-look pass to Jimmy Lambert, who was skating down the weak side, and he one-timed a shot into the back of the net.
Windsor scored at 6:06 in the third period on a goal by Ryan Shaw to cut the Michigan advantage to 6-2, but allowed another Wolverine power-play goal when captain Will Lockwood poked home a shot from Jake Slaker at the 8:16 mark. Jack Olmstead finished the scoring with 3:14 remaining in the contest.
The Wolverines capitalized on three of their six power plays and also were perfect on the penalty kill (6-for-6).
Michigan will open the regular season Friday (Oct. 11) at 7:30 p.m. in the first of two weekend games against No. 10-ranked Clarkson at Yost Ice Arena.
