ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played Wisconsin to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Friday (Oct. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines scored on an own goal in the 75th minute, but the Badgers leveled the match two minutes later on a penalty kick.
Michigan dominated in the early portions of the match, outshooting the Badgers by an 8-1 clip in the first half and maintaining a 64-36 split in possession. The two best chances came off corner kicks: one in the 17th minute that junior Joel Harrison struck, but hit wide of the frame, and the other in the 40th minute that junior Jackson Ragen hit directly to Wisconsin goalkeeper Dean Cowdroy.
The Wolverines had two golden chances to begin the second half. In the 49th minute, graduate student Nebojsa Popovic cut inside the box and had his attempt saved by Cowdroy. Freshman Harry Pithers scooped it up behind him and also put forward a shot, but it was blocked out for a corner. On the ensuing kick, Ragen headed the ball wide of the frame.
U-M got on the board via an own goal in the 75th minute, when Wisconsin's Robin Olofsson inadvertently looped a ball backward over Cowdroy's head and into the net. The lead was short-lived, though, as the referee awarded the Badgers a penalty kick two minutes later, which Noah Leibold converted.
The first overtime had end-to-end action. In the 94th minute, Michigan was awarded a free kick just outside the box. In an advantageous shooting position, junior Mohammed Zakyi attempted to go under the wall, but his shot was blocked out for a corner. A minute later, Popovic was denied by Cowdroy.
The Badgers nearly ended it on a counter-attack in the 95th minute, as Ben Leas was in on the far side. Senior Andrew Verdi came out to challenge and made a wonderful save. The ball rebounded back to Leas and he fired again, but senior Abdou Samake cleared it away to keep the match level. Verdi left the match and was replaced by freshman Owen Finnerty, who played the rest of the way in his first collegiate action. Neither team had any real chances in the second overtime period, and settled for a draw.
The Wolverines will close out their home schedule on Tuesday (Oct. 29), when they host in-state rival Michigan State in the annual Battle for Big Bear. The match has been designated a BLUE OUT, and all fans in attendance are encouraged to wear blue. Kickoff is slated to begin at 8 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium, and the match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
