ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Facing its second top-15 team in three days, the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won 14 events in a decisive 202-98 victory over No. 14 Ohio State on Saturday (Jan. 19) at Canham Natatorium, sending its five-man senior class out with one last dual-meet win in its home pool.
"There were a lot of notable performances today, and they came against a very good team," said head coach Mike Bottom. "The last few days have been challenging with two meets against two really good teams and some travel in between, but we dug deep, rallied around each other and had some real great in-season swims. The crowd today was incredible, too, really packing our stands in the middle of a snowstorm. We can't thank them -- and our senior class -- enough."
The Wolverines made a statement from the opening race, winning the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.16). They went in front for good thanks to a 23.8 split on the breaststroke leg from freshman Will Chan, while sophomore Luiz Gustavo Borges brought it home in 19.3. Borges was impressive once again, sweeping the sprints by taking the 50-yard freestyle (19.74) and 100-yard freestyle (43.81).
For the second time in three days, the breaststroke group was huge, going 1-2-3 in the 100- and 200-yard races. Junior Charlie Swanson won the 100-yard breaststroke (53.91), while junior Tommy Cope was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.82). Junior Jacob Montague was the third member of that trio and later won the 200-yard individual medley by two seconds (1:49.02).
Junior Miles Smachlo stayed hot, sweeping the butterfly events. He defeated Ohio State's Michael Salazar by .01 to take the 100-yard butterfly (47.24), then used a strong third 50 to hold on in a winning effort in the 200-yard butterfly (1:45.91).

Senior Kai Williams bounced back to take the 200-yard backstroke, winning by more than 2.5 seconds to lead a 1-2-3 Michigan finish (1:46.06).
Sophomore Ross Todd was the best diver in the well Saturday, sweeping the one-meter (357.40) and three-meter (385.20) springboard events.
The Wolverines will have one final dual meet before the Big Ten Championships, facing Michigan State on Friday, Feb. 8. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. in East Lansing.
