ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Sierra Schmidt and program alum Gabby DeLoof (2015-18) have been named to the 2018-19 U.S. National Team, per an announcement from USA Swimming on Tuesday (Sept. 4). Schmidt was selected in the 400-meter freestyle, while DeLoof was chosen in the 200-meter freestyle.
This is Schmidt's third consecutive U.S. National Team appearance, following the 2016-17 and 2017-18 cycles. She made the team based on a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle at the Phillips 66 National Championships. Last season as a freshman, Schmidt was a three-time finalist at the Big Ten Championships -- finishing as high as fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle -- and was a two-time All-America Honorable Mention, scoring points in the consolation finals of both the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles at the NCAA Championships.
This is DeLoof's first appearance on the U.S. National Team, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Ali DeLoof, who was on the team during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 cycles. Gabby saw her eligibility expire in March after helping captain the team to a third consecutive Big Ten championship and fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. She blew up this summer at the Phillips 66 National Championships, finishing third in the 200-meter freestyle behind U.S. Olympians Katie Ledecky and Leah Smith, earning a spot on Team USA's Pan Pacific Championships squad.
The National Team is comprised of the top six swimmers in each individual Olympic event based off the combined results of the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships, 2018 Pan Pacific Championships and 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships. With the selection, Schmidt and DeLoof are eligible to be chosen to represent USA Swimming at upcoming international competitions next summer.
Charlie Swanson from the men's swimming and diving team join Schmidt and DeLoof on the 2018-19 National Team.
