ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Austin Swiech, senior Robbie Mertz and junior Jack Hallahan all scored goals within the first half hour of play to pace the University of Michigan men's soccer team to its fourth consecutive win, a 3-0 shutout of Marquette on Monday (Sept. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Henry Mashburn started in net and played the full 90 minutes, making two saves for his third shutout of the season. Sophomores Umar Farouk Osman and Marc Ybarra recorded assists.
Though the Wolverines were put under pressure in the match's opening minutes, it did not last, as Swiech opened the scoring in the 13th minute. The sophomore, making just his fourth career start, ran on to the ball from his position on the back line and struck it well from distance. It took a slight deflection on the way into the net, with an unofficial assist to sophomore Mohammed Zakyi for being in a perfect position to screen Marquette goalkeeper Cedrik Stern.
The lead was doubled just over a minute later. Senior Ivo Cerda started the play, keeping the ball in-bounds and smashing it high into the air toward the box. Osman corralled it and used some fancy footwork to outlet the ball on the left side of the box to Mertz. The senior captain took a touch, cut back inside and unleashed a curler that beat Stern into the left corner of the net, quickly making the score 2-0.
Michigan capped the scoring in the 29th minute on a brilliant left-footed strike from Hallahan. The Englishman started the play on a corner kick, but his service was punched out to Ybarra at the top of the box. Ybarra played it back to Hallahan, who took a touch with his left foot and unleashed a curling shot into the top left corner beyond a diving attempt from Stern.
The Wolverines spent the early portions of the second half on their side of the pitch as Marquette controlled possession. Mashburn made a huge point-blank save to preserve the shutout in the 51st minute, denying Marquette forward Lukas Sunesson from eight yards out. Hallahan had a chance to bag a second goal in the 79th minute, but his free kick toward the near post was saved by Stern.
The Wolverines will hit the road for the first time on Friday (Sept. 14), opening Big Ten Conference play at Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. First touch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
