POZNAN, Poland -- Rising sophomore Megan Hinkle and the American quad sculls (4x) finished their run at the Under-23 World Championships with a sixth-place finish Saturday (July 28) morning at Lake Malta in central Poland.
Hinkle and company began the weekend by placing third in heats before advancing to the A Final with a fourth-place finish in the semifinal. Saturday they raced in a six-boat final against Germany, Great Britain, Romania, Netherlands and Canada.
The Romanians won in 6:40.970, about three seconds ahead of the field. The Dutch took silver with the British in bronze medal position. Hinkle and the American boat took sixth place in 7:02.940.
The U.S. boat fell behind early and a strong second 500 meters was not enough to recover from the separation the Romanian and British boats created on the field. Romania and the Netherlands closed strong with 1:40.67 and 1:40.61 splits over the final 500 meters to take the top two medal positions, while the Brits came in for bronze in 6:45.68.
Below is the remaining schedule for both competing Wolverines:
