TOLEDO, Ohio -- Reigning NCAA 1,500-meter champion Jaimie Phelan was victorious in her first competition for the University of Michigan women's track and field team since last summer as the Wolverines wrapped up their regular season Friday (May 4) at the Toledo Invitational.
Facing stiff wind conditions in a meet that was delayed two hours due to inclement weather conditions, Phelan clocked 2:12.68 to take the win at 800 meters in what served as a rust-buster ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Championships (May 11-13) in Bloomington, Indiana.
The performance -- her first competitive outing since a career-best 2:04.15 in mid-June 2017 -- does not put her in position to qualify for the NCAA postseason at the moment, with only the Big Ten meet remaining to do so.
Only the top-48 ranked athletes in each event will be invited to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Tampa, Florida, in three weekends' time.
Her win was one of four on the day for a Wolverine squad with many of its top athletes sitting out the weekend in preparation for the upcoming conference meet.
Sprinter Jade Harrison accounted for two of those victories, starting the day by anchoring the 4x100 relay team -- also including Torisa Johnson, Meghan Marias and Lauren Morgan -- across the line first in 46.44.
She doubled back for the win in the 100-meter competition in 11.91 (+1.1m/s).
Jena Metwali led the Wolverines in a 1-2-3 sweep of the 1,500-meter event for Michigan's remaining win. Metwali came through first in 4:32.71, followed by Rachel Barrett in 4:35.80 and Sydney Badger in 4:36.66.
