ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team stayed hot, winning its seventh straight match in a 4-0 win over No. 11-ranked Illinois on Saturday (April 7) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan put together a strong effort on the doubles court, grabbing a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the early lead in the team match.
It was all U-M at No. 1 as juniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor raced out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-1 decision.
Moments later, the sophomore duo of Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk came through with a 6-1 win to clinch the point. The pivotal point in the match came early in Michigan's first service game. U-M was in a 40-30 hole on Lommer's serve but the Wolverines took the next two points to keep it on serve. That jumpstarted the pair, who did not drop a game the rest of the way to seal up the doubles point.
Fahey wasted little time in pushing Michigan's lead to 2-0, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1.
Lommer accounted for Michigan's third point of the day, grinding out a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3. It was all Lommer in the first set in the 6-2 win. The lefty broke to start the second, but it was a sign of things to come as neither play could hold serve through the early part of the set. Lommer finally held on her serve in the eighth game of the set, taking a 5-3 lead en route to the 6-4 win to wrap up the match.
Minor dropped her first set, 2-6, before using a 2-0 start to take control of the second set to send it to a third. In the third, Minor broke to start the fame as Asuka Kawai's return of Minor's overhand found the net. It was all Minor from there as she coasted to the 6-0 third-set win to clinch the team match.
Patiuk was one game away from winning at No. 6, while freshman Alyvia Jones and senior Mira Ruder-Hook had just started third sets when the remaining matches were abandoned.
Michigan completes the weekend tomorrow (Sunday, April 8), hosting Northwestern at noon.
