FAIRFAX, Calif. -- Paced with her first career top-20 individual finish, freshman Ashley Kim tied for 18th with a 147 36-hole total to lead the University of Michigan women's golf team to a tie for 14th with a 603 team tally at the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate held at the Meadow Club.
The tournament was originally scheduled for a 54-hole event, but frost delayed Monday's first round and eventually reduced San Francisco's spring event to 36 holes. Following the wait and using five birdies, Kim paced the Maize and Blue during the first round as her 72 tied her for eighth individually while the Wolverines posted a 309 to position themselves 15th.
In today's final 18 holes, Kim was able to get off to a strong start and played the back nine at two-under before she found trouble closing the round to finish with a 75.
"Ashley put herself in contention, and I know she's frustrated with her finish," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "But she will be there again, no doubt, and use this experience."
Thanks to sophomore Hannah Ghelfi tying a career-best 73 (+1) and a second 73 from junior Elodie Van Dievoet, U-M dropped six shots for a 303 and moved one position, tying for 14th at 612 with Idaho.
"Overall, we have to regroup as a team," said Dowling. "It's as simple as that. Moving forward we have two tremendous opportunities to compete against some great teams around the country. We are fortunate for that and will do our best to take advantage."
Van Dievoet's second round helped U-M put two among the top 50 as she tied for 41st at 152 (79-73), while Ghelfi tied for 50th a shot back at 153 (80-73).
"Both Elodie and Hannah came back strong today after a tough start to the tournament," Dowling said. "Elodie isn't hitting the ball well but was able to score, which takes guts. Hannah also shot a solid score today and really helped us."
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor after their spring break training and competition. They will have two weeks of training and start the semester before heading back out for tournament play. U-M will head to Auburn, Alabama, for the Evans Derby Experience, Sunday through Tuesday, March 18-20. The 54-hole event will be held at the Auburn University Club.
