TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team turned in a strong opening effort in their first full-team meet of the season at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge on Friday and Saturday (March 23-24).
Claire Borchers scored a victory at 3,000 meters, Jamie Morrissey notched a runner-up finish in her first U-M competition of 2018 and Jade Harrison garnered top-five finishes in three different events to headline the Michigan weekend at Arizona State.
Those three athletes accounted for five of Michigan's seven top-five finishes on the afternoon, with Harrison's fifth-place efforts at both 100 and 200 meters and a turn on the fourth-place 4x100 relay making up nearly half of that haul.
Harrison teamed up with Meghan Marias, Torisa Johnson and Lauren Morgan to clock 45.51 in the relay, good for a tie for the fourth-fastest time in school history. The quartet is closing in on the 45.01 school record from 1998, and posted the best time by a Wolverine squad since 2013.
Harrison followed it up with individual fifth-place showings at both 100 meters and 200 meters in 11.85 (+0.7m/s) and 23.86 (-0.2m/s), respectively. Johnson joined her in sub-12-second territory, clocking 11.98 (+0.1m/s) for eighth.
While Harrison was perhaps the most prolific Wolverine of the weekend, it was Borchers who notched the team's sole individual win. She paired up with Hannah Meier to go 1-2 at 3,000 meters, crossing the line in a career-best 9:32.29 with Meier close behind in 9:37.89.
Morrissey looked strong in her first track meet of the 2018 season in a U-M uniform after sitting out the indoor season for lack of remaining eligibility. She was the runner-up at 1,500 meters in 4:20.91, just over three seconds faster than her debut performance at this distance a year ago. The performance likely will advance her to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in May.
An even more complete team likely will suit up for the Wolverines' next outing at the Battle of the Blues hosted by Duke on April 7, with Aaron Howell set to compete in her first heptathlon at Georgia on April 6-7.
