MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- For the second consecutive year, University of Michigan men's swimmer PJ Ransford is the recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 Award, given annually to the participating student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at the each of the NCAA's 90 championships. The announcement was made prior to the finals session on Friday (March 23) at the NCAA Championships.
Ransford received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering back in December and is now a graduate student in the College of Engineering. Named an Academic All-Big Ten honoree for the third consecutive year on Wednesday, he is one of 21 winter honorees in the conference to have maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
A native of Pittsford, New York, Ransford finished 12th in the 500-yard freestyle yesterday (March 22) at the NCAA Championships and will swim the 1,650-yard freestyle tomorrow (Saturday, March 24) in what will be his final collegiate race. One of the best distance swimmers in program history, he is a two-time All-American, three-time All-America Honorable Mention and was the 2016 Big Ten champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Ransford has represented the United States at several international competitions, most recently at last summer's World University Games in Taiwan, and has been a member of the USA Swimming National Team since 2016.
