The eighth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (1-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will travel to Palo Alto, California, to compete in the International Collegiate Challenge meet, hosted by Stanford University on Saturday (March 3) at 4 p.m. PST. The meet features No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Illinois, No. 12 California, as well as the Japanese and Canadian National Teams.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan is ranked No. 8 in the CGA coaches poll, and is in the top 10 on four events in the RoadToNationals.com scoring, led by a No. 5 ranking on still rings (68.533). In addition to a No. 8 ranking on vault (70.283), U-M checks in at No. 9 on both parallel bars (65.950) and floor exercise (68.230).
• Against Illinois (Feb. 24), both junior Emyre Cole and redshirt-junior Marty Strech earned event titles. Cole earned the plaudit on floor with a 14.55, while Strech scored a 14.15 in still rings competition to tie for the top spot. The win for Strech was the second event title of his career and first still-ring title, while Cole's victory is the 13th in his career and third floor exercise title.
• Freshman Jacob Moore is the top-ranked Wolverine on any event, as he holds down the No. 3 spot in the nation on floor exercise with a three-score average of 14.433. He also holds the top score in the NCAA on the event after scoring a 14.950 against Ohio State (Feb. 3).
• Strech joins Moore as the other Wolverine ranked in the top-10 on an event, as he is ranked No. 10 and owns a three-event score of 14.150 on still rings.
• The International Collegiate Challenge was a late add for the Wolverines, as a trip to Puerto Rico was canceled due to damage from Hurricane Maria. Senior captain Tristian Perez-Rivera hails from the island.
OPPONENTS
• Stanford, the host institution, checks in as the No. 2 team in the CGA poll, followed by No. 3 Illinois and No. 12 California. The Canadian and Japanese national teams will also be featured in the meet. Japan is the reigning world champion and took home a team gold medal at the 2016 Olympics.
