ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team held its annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad meet, with Maize topping Blue, 332.850-321.800, on Saturday (Dec. 8) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
In a meet where four scores counted, with as many as seven gymnasts on each event per team, the Maize squad went ahead after the first rotation and never relinquished its lead.
Maize posted three of the top four scores on floor, with sophomore Cameron Bock (Tustin, Calif./Connections Academy) scoring 13.95 and claiming the individual title. Blue found pommel horse to be its best event of the afternoon, claiming three of the top four scores on the day. Sophomore Jacob Moore, junior Justin Murphy (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) and junior Mack Lasker all eclipsed the 14.00 mark for the Blue team.
Blue trailed by just 2.55 points after the second rotation, but Maize pulled away after a 58.00 performance on vault in the third rotation. The Maize squad expanded its lead to 9.25 points, and forced the Blue team to fight an uphill battle the rest of the meet.
Freshman Kevin Penev (76.95) joined Bock (85.25) and Cole (81.80) as the only gymnasts to compete in the all-around competition.
Bock took the event title on floor (13.95), rings (14.35) and high bar (14.40), while Cole brought home the vault title with a 14.80 mark. Mack Lasker was the only individual winner on the Blue team, capturing the pommel horse title with a score of 14.55.
A trio of the freshmen in Penev (all-around), Miles Miller (floor, high bar), and Casey Wentland (still rings) all made their U-M debuts.
