EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team crowned three individual champions at the annual Michigan State Open on Sunday (Nov. 3) at the Spartans' Jenison Field House. In all, the Wolverines boasted eight finalists and 13 total placewinners over the freshman/sophomore and open divisions.
All three individual champions were program newcomers in redshirt sophomore transfer Kanen Storr (141) and true freshmen Will Lewan (157) and Mason Parris (Hwt). Storr and Lewan won by earning close decision wins over teammates, while Parris scored a quick fall -- his third bonus win of the day -- in his championship bout.
Storr, ranked 18th in Flowrestling's preseason poll, went 4-0 on the day and, with three Wolverines making the 141-pound semifinals, earned back-to-back wins over teammates in the semifinals and final, including a 5-3 decision against redshirt junior Sal Profaci in the latter. Storr finished on a first-period double leg and countered a Profaci leg attack to add another takedown in the second.
Lewan was victorious in his first collegiate tournament, posting a 4-0 record with three straight overtime wins to capture the 157-pound title. He defeated fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo, 10-8, behind a four-point pancake in the first and an overtime takedown in the championship bout. Pantaleo, ranked fourth by Flowrestling, scored three takedowns to overcome the initial deficit, but Lewan finished on a single-leg attack early in sudden victory to complete the upset.
Parris, like Lewan, went 4-0 in his collegiate debut to claim the heavyweight title, earning a major decision and pins, including a lightning-quick stick against Central Michigan's 15th-ranked Matt Stencel in the championship bout. Stencel went upper body off the opening whistle and tried for a headlock on the edge, but Parris countered, muscling the Chippewa to his back to get the call just 14 seconds in.
Eight Wolverines advanced to the championship round in the open division, with sophomore Drew Mattin, redshirt junior Ben Lamantia and redshirt junior Jackson Striggow dropping their final matches at 125, 149 and 197 pounds, respectively.
In addition to Lewan and Parris, freshmen Nick Freeman and Max Maylor both placed in their collegiate debuts, taking sixth at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively, in the freshman/sophomore division. All Wolverine freshmen competed unattached.
The Wolverines will kick off the dual-meet portion of their 2018-19 season on the road next Friday (Nov. 11) when they head to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to take on in-state rival Central Michigan at 2 p.m. on McGuirk Arena.
