COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of Michigan women's swimmers Catie DeLoof and Sierra Schmidt, along with alum Gabby DeLoof (2015-18), have been selected to represent the United States at the 2019 World University Games, per an announcement from USA Swimming on Thursday (Oct. 18). The Games will be held July 4-10, 2019, in Naples, Italy.
Catie DeLoof, a senior on this year's team, is coming off a breakout junior year during which she dropped eight seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. She was a three-time finalist at the Big Ten Championships and individually qualified for the NCAA Championships, finishing as high as 11th in the 200-yard freestyle. Catie earned her spot on the World University Games roster with a 12th-place finish in the 100-meter freestyle at the Phillips 66 National Championships this past July.
She becomes the third member of the DeLoof family to represent the United States on the international stage; eldest sister, Ali (2013-16), set World and American records at the 2016 Short Course World Championships, while Gabby (2015-18) is coming off an appearance at the Pan Pacific Championships in August.
Schmidt, a sophomore, makes the World University Games roster for the second consecutive cycle after winning bronze in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2017 Games in Taiwan. She will swim the 400-meter freestyle in Naples, earning her place on the squad following a fifth-place finish in the same event at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
Gabby DeLoof was chosen to swim the 100- and 200-meter freestyles in Naples. She will also represent USA Swimming at the 2019 FINA World Championships as a relay-only swimmer. Gabby was third in the 200-meter freestyle and 11th in the 100-meter freestyle at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
