WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Fresh off her 2017 NCAA singles title, junior Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team has officially received a wild card from the USTA into the main draw of the 2017 U.S. Open. In addition, she will participate in the American Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 7-9) at the U.S. Open.
Minor will be the first Wolverine in program history to compete in the singles main draw at the U.S. Open during her collegiate career. The U.S. Open runs Aug. 28-Sept. 10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The draw will be released closer to start of the event.
It also marks the second straight season that a Wolverine will compete in the American Collegiate Invitational; Ronit Yurovsky played in it last year. Open only to American college players, the event began in 2014 as a way to spotlight college tennis during the U.S. Open. Eight men and eight women will play single-elimination singles tournaments Thursday to Saturday during the second week of the U.S. Open, with the winners receiving a wild card into the 2018 U.S. Open main draw or qualifying, depending on their ranking next summer.
Minor picked up her second straight All-America honor after winning the 2017 NCAA singles title as a sophomore. She finished with a 33-6 record after winning nine straight to end the season. Minor put together a 19-5 mark during dual matches, going 6-3 at No. 1 and 13-2 at No. 2 en route to finishing the season ranked No. 9. Minor became the first Wolverine in program history to win a national championship and knocked off three top-16 seeds along the way. She was honored as the 2016-17 Michigan Female Athlete of the Year for her accomplishments as a sophomore.
