BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Three members of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team, along with two alums and two coaches, were at the 2017 FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last week (July 23-30).
On the heels of a successful rookie campaign, sophomore Felix Auböck (Austria) had a breakout meet on the international stage, finishing fifth in the 400-meter freestyle (3:44.19, the top time in preliminaries) and sixth in the 800-meter freestyle (7:49.24 in preliminaries). He was also 12th in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:02.78) and 17th in the 200-meter freestyle (1:47.40). His coach in Budapest was assistant coach Sam Wensman.
Auböck's performance is a steep improvement from last year's Olympics when he was 25th in the 400-meter freestyle (3:49.35) and 42nd in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:36.24).

Incoming freshman Ricardo Vargas (Mexico), another 2016 Rio Olympian, swam four events. He was 22nd in the 800-meter freestyle (8:04.17), 27th in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:24.79), 31st in the 400-meter freestyle (3:53.63) and 32nd in the 400-meter IM (4:30.37).
Two alums were also in Budapest. Richard Funk (U-M 2012-15, Canada) won a bronze medal in the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay, while also finishing 15th in the 100-meter breaststroke and 19th in the 50-meter breaststroke. Anders Lie Nielsen (2013-16, Denmark) swam two individual events -- finishing as high as 32nd in the 200-meter freestyle -- and appeared on two relays.
