COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Sophomore Miranda Tucker, freshman Sierra Schmidt and alum Ali DeLoof (2013-16) of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team have been selected to represent Team USA at the 2017 World University Games, per an official announcement from USA Swimming on Monday (July 10). The Games will be held Aug. 20-27 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
The three swimmers will be joined on Team USA by senior PJ Ransford and sophomore Jacob Montague, who were named to the men's team. Additionally, associate head coach Rick Bishop was selected as one of the three assistant coaches for the women's team. Juniors Jamie Yeung and Siobhán Haughey are also going to Taiwan, representing Hong Kong. It will be Haughey's second international competition of the summer following the FINA World Championships later this month.
All three swimmers were chosen to the roster based on their performances at last month's Phillips 66 National Championships. To be eligible, swimmers must be between ages 17-23 and either be current college students or recent graduates.
DeLoof was named to the team in the 50- and 100-meter backstrokes. This will be DeLoof's second time representing Team USA in an international competition, following the 2016 FINA Swimming World Championships (25m) from December 2016.
Schmidt will swim the 400- and 1,500-meter freestyles. She has plenty of international experience, winning gold medals in the 800- and 1,500-meter freestyles at the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, and an additional gold in the 800-meter freestyle at the 2015 Pan American Games.
Tucker, a transfer from Indiana, will swim the 50-, 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes. A former U.S. Junior National Team member, Tucker was a two-time NCAA All-American for the Hoosiers in 2016, finishing second in the 200-meter breaststroke and third in the 100-meter breaststroke. She will be eligible this fall and have three years of eligibility remaining.
