COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of Michigan men's swimmers PJ Ransford and Jacob Montague have been selected to represent Team USA at the 2017 World University Games, per an official announcement from USA Swimming on Monday (July 10). The Games will be held Aug. 20-27 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
The pair will be joined on Team USA by women's swimmers Ali DeLoof (2013-16), Sierra Schmidt and Miranda Tucker. Additionally, associate head coach Rick Bishop was selected as one of the three assistant coaches for the women's team. Juniors Jamie Yeung and Siobhán Haughey are also going to Taiwan, representing Hong Kong. It will be Haughey's second international competition of the summer following the FINA World Championships later this month.
Ransford and Montague were chosen to the roster based on their performances at last month's Phillips 66 National Championships. To be eligible, swimmers must be between ages 17-23 and either be current college students or recent graduates.
Ransford will swim the 800- and 1,500-meter freestyles. He took third in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the Phillips 66 National Championships, narrowly missing selection for the FINA World Championships. Ransford is a two-time All-American and former Big Ten champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and was the recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 Award in March, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the NCAA Championships. He's previously represented Team USA at the 2016 FINA Swimming World Championships (25m) and at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
Montague will swim the 50- and 100-meter breaststrokes. He swam both events at the Phillips 66 National Championships, finishing fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:00.39). Montague won a gold medal in that event at last summer's Junior Pan Pacific Championships.Â
