ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four members of the University of Michigan rowing team have been selected to all-region teams by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), it was announced on Tuesday (June 6).
Senior/port Kaitlin Wright and junior starboard Kendall Brewer earned first team honors, while starboard senior Louisa Freeman and junior port/starboard Kalia Krichko were awarded second team recognition.
Those four Wolverines were members of Michigan's first varsity eight boat, which outperformed its NCAA Championships seed to finish fifth in the nation in last month's NCAA Grand Final (May 28). Their efforts helped the Maize and Blue reach the podium as a team for the first time since 2012, placing third overall.
A native of Lakeville, Minnesota, Wright competed as a member of the first varsity eight boat for her final three seasons as a Wolverine, rowing in stroke seat for much of her senior season and the fifth seat for the NCAA Championships. She was also CRCA second team All-America selection in 2016 and a second team all-region selection the year prior, in addition to having two first team All-Big Ten honors under her belt.
Brewer was invited to USRowing's U23 Selection Camp earlier this spring for the second time in her career, and she rowed in the No. 6 and No. 7 seats during the season. The Austin, Texas, native was a Pocock second team All-American in 2016 and second team all-region selection the year prior. Both Wright and Brewer earned their second consecutive first team All-Big Ten honors last month.
A four-year varsity eight rower, Freeman rowed in bow seat and closed her career in the No. 2 seat in the NCAA Championships. A native of Westport, Connecticut, she also earned CRCA all-region honors in 2015, and this past spring she collected her third consecutive second team all-conference honor.
Krichko, a native of Ridgefield, Connecticut, recently completed her first season with the first varsity eight, having spent the 2016 season as part of the 1V4 crew. She rowed in the No. 2 seat for much of this season before taking over the bow position for the NCAA Championships, and she collects her first postseason accolade with this honor.
The CRCA all-region awards recognize the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains from five regions across the country. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their team's varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
As CRCA All-Region selections, each of these Wolverines is eligible for All-America award selection.
