TEMPE, Ariz. -- The sophomore pair of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team each earned All-America honors in singles as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Thursday (June 8). It is the second straight season that Michigan has had multiple All-Americans in singles.
Fahey earned the first All-America citation of her career after finishing her sophomore season with a 36-7 record in singles action. She reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship and won both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in the fall. Fahey went 21-2 during dual-match play, recording a 14-1 record at No. 1 and a 7-1 mark at No. 2. She lost just three matches during the 2017 calendar year and ended the season ranked No. 18 by the ITA.
Minor picked up her second straight All-America honor after winning the 2017 NCAA singles title. The sophomore finished with a 33-6 record after winning nine straight to end the season. Minor put together a 19-5 mark during dual matches, going 6-3 at No. 1 and 13-2 at No. 2 en route to finishing the season ranked No. 9. Minor became the first Wolverine in program history to win a national championship and knocked off three top-16 seeds along the way. She joins Emina Bektas and Denise Muresan as the only Wolverines in school history with two All-America honors in singles.
Michigan now has six players who account for nine All-America singles citations in school history. All but one of those honors has come under head coach Ronni Bernstein, who just completed her 10th season at the helm in Ann Arbor.
