ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and cruised to three singles wins in a 4-0 victory over Youngstown State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon (May 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
It was all Michigan at court No. 1 in doubles as the No. 9-ranked pair of junior Alex Najarian and sophomore Kate Fahey got a break to start and did not drop a game in a 6-0 win.
It was much of the same at No. 3, with junior Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Valeria Patiuk cruising to a 6-1 win to clinch the match's first point.
The Maize and Blue kept it rolling in singles, winning all six first sets when senior Annie Wierda wrapped up a 7-4 tiebreak win at No. 6.
Fahey put Michigan's second point on the board, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. Fahey won 11 straight games before dropping one, coming back in the ensuing game to break Dominika Lackova for the win.
Freshman Chiara Lommer was not far behind, making quick work of Nehel Sahni at No. 4. Following a first-set win, Lommer dropped the first game of the second set but ripped off six straight games to provide Michigan's third point.
It was a race to the finish as Ruder-Hook, sophomore Brienne Minor and Najarian were each one game away from winning their respective matches.
Najarian came through first, breaking her opponent in the final game for a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3. The final three matches on court were abandoned.
