ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team marked a season-best team score of 414.950, besting last week's score by nearly eight points -- along with new event highs on pommel horse, vault and floor -- in defeating the No. 17 UIC Flames (368.600) during Senior Night on Saturday (March 25) in Cliff Keen Arena.
The Wolverines (7-7, 3-5 B1G) kicked off the evening with a consistent slate of pommel horse performances as they set a new season-high score of 68.500. U-M earned an early lead over UIC, which registered a 62.300 on floor. All five gymnasts broke the 13.00 plateau with sophomore Samuel Su's 13.90 leading the way, followed by sophomore Uche Eke's 13.75 and freshman Mack Lasker's 13.65. All together, the trio took the top three scoring positions on this event.
Moving to still rings, U-M extended the lead as UIC competed on pommel horse and after junior/sophomore Marty Strech registered a 14.05 and sophomore Ryan Dunning recorded a 14.10 for the event title.
On vault, their strongest event, the Wolverines scored a season-best 72.350. The vault squad hit all five of their routines with their high-flying acrobatics earning at least a 14.15 or higher. Sophomore Anthony McCallum's title-winning 14.85 and his Tsukahara Double Pike anchored the team, while sophomore Emyre Cole contributed a 14.70, and Strech added a 14.40.
In the fourth rotation on parallel bars, Michigan retained a commanding lead over the Flames that totaled to 276.200-248.800. UIC netted its best event score of the night with a 65.85 on vault. Senior Jonathan Chin and McCallum steadied the Wolverines with 13.90s to share the event title. Cole notched a 13.80 and freshman Mitchell Brown tied his season-high mark of 13.70.
On high bar, Strech nailed his set to earn a 14.10, secure the event title and help U-M remain ahead of UIC. Michigan saw three stuck dismounts from Strech, Eke and senior Adam Dean, while freshman Thomas Paul set a new season-best 13.75.
Concluding U-M's last home meet of the season with floor exercise, the team combined explosive floor routines to take home a new season-best team score of 71.400. Each member of the group notched scores of 14.05 or better. Dean and freshman Parker Chiapuzio recorded season highs as McCallum's 14.45, Cole's 14.40 and Stefanelli's 14.35 in his final routine in Cliff Keen arena paced the Wolverines.
U-M led from start to finish, sweeping all six events and owning the top 1-2-3 performances for each event. Additionally, McCallum earned the Newt Loken Award for his spectacular performances on vault and floor exercise.
