ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up the doubles point and earned wins on five of six singles courts in a 6-1 win over No. 18 Texas Sunday (Feb. 5) inside the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (4-0) remain perfect in the dual match season heading into the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Michigan picked up the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. The No. 2 pair of sophomore Brienne Minor and junior Mira Ruder-Hook got on the board with a 6-3 win over Neda Koprcina and Petra Granic. The No. 4-ranked doubles duo of junior Alex Najarian and sophomore Kate Fahey clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Bianca Turati and Katie Poluta. Junior Kara Hall and freshman Valeria Patiuk led 6-5 on court 3 when the point was clinched.
Freshman Chiara Lommer was first off the court with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Dani Wagland at No. 5 singles. Minor finished shortly after Lommer as she beat Koprcina, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2. A Texas win at No. 4 cut the Wolverine lead to 3-1, but Fahey clinched the dual at No. 1 singles when she defeated Bianca Turati, 6-4, 6-2.
Patiuk gave the Maize and Blue a 5-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Poluta. In the only match to go three sets, Najarian battled back from dropping the first set to Anna Turati to taking a second-set tiebreak, 7-5. With the match clinched, the pair went to a 10-point tiebreak to determine the winner. Najarian battled back from a Texas match point, winning the final three points for the 11-9 third-set victory.
Michigan is back in action next weekend (Feb. 10-13) at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in New Haven, Connecticut.
