COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a tightly contested doubles point and the four of the first five singles matches off court, falling to No. 5-ranked Ohio State, 5-1, on Friday afternoon (Feb. 17) at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center.
Ohio State took the first doubles match off court, winning 6-1 at No. 3.
U-M's top pair of junior Alex Najarian and Kate Fahey pulled out a 6-3 win at No. 1 to even the doubles score. Tied at 3-3 and with Najarian back to serve, the Wolverine pair climbed out of a 40-0 hole and did not look back in ripping off three straight games for the win.
The No. 2 pair of sophomore Brienne Minor and junior Mira Ruder-Hook went up a break at 4-2 and held a 5-3 lead before Ohio State stormed back. The Buckeyes won three straight games en route to a 6-5 lead with the serve. Ruder-Hook and Minor fought off four match points and broke in the final game to send the match to a tiebreaker. It was all OSU in the breaker, as the Buckeyes won 7-2 to take the match's first point.
Ohio State expanded its lead to 3-0 with wins at no. 1 and No. 5.
Fahey got Michigan on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 55 Anna Sanford at No. 2. Fahey broke on a deuce point for a 5-4 lead in the second and served out the match in the ensuing game.
Ohio State came back with wins at No. 3 and No. 6 within seconds of each other to clinch the 5-1 win.
Freshman Chiara Lommer was up a set and on serve at 3-2 in the second set of her match at No. 4 when it was abandoned.
U-M is back in action on Sunday (Feb. 19), hosting Baylor at the Varsity Tennis Center at 11:30 a.m.
