WOLVERINE BITES
Freshman Mitchell Brown will compete in session one of prelims and will begin on still rings at 1 p.m. PST, while the other U-M trio will compete in session two of prelims and start on pommel horse at 6:30 p.m. PST. U-M alumnus and 2016 Winter Cup all-around champion Sam Mikulak will compete in session two as well and will begin the night on floor exercise. The finals will be held in session three Saturday (Feb. 18) beginning at 7:15 p.m. PST.
In terms of events, Dmitri Belanovski will compete on floor exercise, vault, still rings, parallel bars and high bar. Anthony McCallum will partake in floor exercise, vault, parallel bars, pommel horse and still rings, while Mitchell Brown will compete on parallel bars, vault and pommel horse. Emyre Cole will compete on all six events.
Following Saturday's competition, the top seven gymnasts will receive a spot on the U.S. Men's Senior National team and up to eight other competitors could receive an invitation to join the national squad. Due to this being the start of a new Olympic cycle, all returning U.S. National Team members must score one national team point to maintain their spot on the team. Overall, the meet figures to be more wide open with additional national team spots up for grabs.
After the Winter Cup, NCAA men's gymnastics will revert to a five up, five count scoring system, eliminating the dropping of the lowest score of a team on a certain event.
Michigan will return to action as a team on Saturday (Feb. 25) in its first home meet of the season vs. the Cal Bears at 2 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena.
