NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and took three of the first four singles matches off court to knock off No. 8-ranked Vanderbilt, 4-1, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11) in consolation action of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
The Wolverines won the doubles point for the fifth straight match but in a different fashion than the previous four. The No. 2 pair of sophomore Brienne Minor and junior Mira Ruder-Hook was first off court, winning 6-4 to remain unbeaten in dual-match play.
U-M's No. 3 duo of freshmen Chiara Lommer and Valeria Patiuk clinched the doubles point for the Wolverines with a 6-4 victory. It was the first win for the pair in dual-match play as U-M had gotten wins at No. 1 and No. 2 in the previous four matches.
Things tightened in singles action as Michigan pulled out four first sets, including two in tiebreakers.
Minor made quick work of No. 4-ranked Astra Sharma at the top spot, putting U-M's second point on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Classmate Kate Fahey was the next Wolverine off court, defeating No. 8-ranked Sydney Campbell in straight sets, 7-6 (7), 6-3. Fahey fought off four set points in the first-set tiebreaker, falling behind 6-3 before tying it at 6-6. Campbell won the next point but Fahey ripped off the next three points to take the set. Fahey carried the momentum over into the next set en route to the win.
Vanderbilt got a point back at No. 6, cutting Michigan's lead to 3-1.
It was going to come down to a third set as junior Alex Najarian, Ruder-Hook and Lommer each entered third sets after splitting the first two.
Najarian went up a break at 4-2 and led 5-2 in the third before Georgina Sellyn won two straight games to close the gap to 5-4. Najarian came through in the ensuing game to wrap up the 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win for U-M's fourth point.
