ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Red Berenson will be honored for his 33 seasons of coaching University of Michigan ice hockey when Red Berenson Rink will be officially dedicated in his honor Friday, Jan. 5, at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan will be hosting Notre Dame in a Big Ten Conference contest with puck drop scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to their seats as Berenson will participate in a special ceremonial puck drop and a tribute video will be shown. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative Red Berenson Rink rally towel, and fans are encouraged to wear maize, as Michigan is planning to "Maize Out Yost" for the rivalry clash.
Limited tickets are still available for the game either online or by phone at (734) 764-0247 or (866) 296-MTIX.
The U-M Board of Regents approved Oct. 19 at its monthly meeting the designation of the ice rink as the Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena in honor of the legendary figure.
Berenson was a two-time All-American as a player at Michigan before a 17-year NHL career that included winning the Stanley Cup as a member of the Montreal Canadiens in 1965 and 1966. After coaching in the NHL for three years, Berenson took over the Michigan program in 1984 and coached the Wolverines to national championships in 1996 and 1998 in addition to 21 conference championships.
Berenson retired from coaching following the 2016-17 season. He continues to serve the department as he works to fulfill his goal of endowing all Michigan Ice Hockey Scholarships. Current financial commitments exceed $20 million.
