ATHENS, Ga. -- Sophomores Felix Auböck (200-yard freestyle) and Jacob Montague (100-yard breaststroke) cruised to event wins to guide the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on the second day of the UGA Fall Invitational, held Saturday (Dec. 2) at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The Wolverines remain in second place (639 points), trailing California by 31 points.
Auböck looked smooth all day, posting the top time out of the morning in the 200-yard freestyle and improving on that for the finals, touching in 1:33.69. Three others qualified for the final behind him, including junior Mokhtar Al-Yamani in third (1:35.78), junior Kai Williamsin sixth (1:37.02) and freshman Luiz Gustavo Borges in seventh (1:37.47).
Montague, the second seed in the 100-yard breaststroke out of the morning, sprinted to win in finals, though his time was just a tick slower (52.43). Classmate Jeremy Babinet, who snuck into the final in eighth, improved his seed (to seventh) and dropped time (54.07).
The Wolverines dominated the 400-yard IM with seven swimmers claiming NCAA "B" times. Sophomore Charlie Swanson led the way with a third-place finish, posting a three-second drop from the morning and coming within a few tenths of his Big Ten-winning time from last February (3:41.53). Another sophomore, Tommy Cope, was seventh (3:44.48).
Senior Evan White led a trio of swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly final, taking third (46.03). Sophomore James Jones popped the second-fastest time of the morning -- his 45.89 is sixth-best in school history, ahead of White -- but finished seventh in the finals (47.05). Sophomore Miles Smachlo was eighth (47.16).
On the one-meter springboard, freshman Ross Todd finished fourth (308.85) and sophomore Jake Herremans was fifth (291.85). Each had better scores in preliminaries: 336.00 for Herremans, 329.35 for Todd.
Seniors Tristan Sanders and Paul Powerspicked up additional points with berths in the 100-yard backstroke final, finishing seventh (47.72) and eighth (48.39), respectively.
The Wolverines also picked up NCAA "B" cuts on both the 200-yard medley relay (1:25.12) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:21.66).
The UGA Fall Invitational concludes Sunday (Dec. 3). Preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. with finals following at 3 p.m.
