PRINCETON, N.J. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team dropped a pair of decisions at the National Wrestling Coaches Association's 52nd annual All-Star Classic on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 5) at Princeton's Jadwin Gym.
Junior/sophomore Stevan Micic, ranked second nationally, suffered a 7-1 loss to top-ranked Seth Gross of South Dakota State in the 133-pound contest. Micic trailed for most of the bout after giving up an early single-leg takedown in the first period. Gross, last season's NCAA runner-up, rode out the second period and added a stall point before securing another single leg in the final 30 seconds of the third to ice the match.
Senior/junior Alec Pantaleo, ranked fifth at 157 pounds, also struggled to overcome an early and sizable deficit in a 10-4 loss against Riders' sixth-ranked B.J. Clagon. He scored twice on deep Pantaleo attacks in the first period, including a feet-to-back double leg early that put the Wolverine in a 6-0 hole. Pantaleo finished on a takedown of his own late in the third period, but could not score again.
The NWCA All-Star Classic pits the nation's top collegiate wrestlers against each other in challenge matches that are often seen as a preview of the NCAA Championships. All matches are exhibition contests and do not count against the wrestlers' season records.
Michigan will officially kick off the 2017-18 season next Friday (Nov. 10), hosting Arizona State in its season dual debut at Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi, Michigan. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. start and features free admission.
