Dowling Named Team International Assistant Coach for 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golf head coach Jan Dowling was named an assistant coach for Team International competing at the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup this summer at Evian Resort Golf Club in southeastern France.
"I am thrilled to be representing the International side as part of the Palmer Cup," said Dowling. "With the addition of the top female amateurs in the world competing alongside the men, this competition is unique. Mr. Palmer was a legend in all of sport and it's an honor to be part of his legacy.
"Three things near and dear to me are world-class golf, my home country of Canada and the University of Michigan. To be an assistant coach representing all three is a true honor and I cannot wait to compete alongside these great athletes from all sides of the pond."
In a Ryder Cup-style tournament co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), the event features the top university/college golfers, matching the United States against an International team.
The 2018 event, to be played July 6-8 at Evian Resort Golf Club, will be the first played under the expanded format to include men's and women's USA collegiate golfers, making it the only major tournament to feature men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
A Bradford, Canada native, Dowling is in her fifth season as head coach with the Wolverines. She has reshaped the Michigan program into a Big Ten and national contender, with back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships in 2016 and 2017.
After a four-year wait, Dowling's 2015-16 squad returned to the NCAA postseason by rallying with a sixth-place finish at the Alabama Regional to advance to the 2016 Finals for just the second time in program history and the first in 14 years.
After missing the first team cut by just four shots, the Wolverines tied for 18th to end a historic season. This past season, Michigan tied for 16th at NCAAs while Elodie Van Dievoet tied for fourth -- both bests in program history. Prior to her stint at Michigan, Dowling served as head coach at Florida from 2009-12 and was an assistant at Kent State, Duke and Tennessee.
As a collegiate golfer at Kent State, she helped lead the Golden Flashes to four-straight MAC championships. Dowling was the individual medalist two years in a row at the MAC Championship, a four-time first team All-MAC selection and was named the 2000 MAC Player of the Year.
From 2003-05, Dowling competed on the Futures Golf Tour and BMO Canadian Women's Tour, combining for six top-10 finishes. She qualified for the 2005 LPGA Tour Canadian Women's Open. She won the 2000 Canadian Amateur and was named the SCORE Golf Canadian Female Amateur of the Year. Dowling was a member of the Canadian Team at the 2002 World Golf Amateur Championships and was a member of the Ontario Amateur Team in 1999.
