ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team was defeated by No. 15-ranked Ohio State, 5-1, Saturday night (Nov. 25) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
Ohio State started the scoring 5:52 into the contest when Christian Lampasso found the back of the net off a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle.
The Wolverines evened the score at 1 at the 7:49 mark of the second period, when junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi received a dropback pass from classmate Cooper Marody at the point and buried a wrist shot, high-blocker side.
The stalemate was short-lived, however, when the Buckeyes responded less than a minute later. Matthew Weis' pass from behind the net found Tanner Laczynski in traffic in front of the goal and Laczynski buried it 8:38 into the second stanza to regain a one-goal lead.
OSU was able to convert on its third power-play opportunity of the night, 18:17 into the second period, off the stick off Tyson Jobst to increase the visitors' lead to 3-1.
Michigan was granted a five-on-three power play after two consecutive Buckeye penalties early in the final period. Despite controlling the puck in the offensive zone during the 1:27 span, the Wolverines were unable to capitalize on the two-man advantage.
Ohio State added two more goals in the third period to push the game out of reach for the Wolverines, who held a 21-7 shot advantage in the final frame.
The series, which dates back to 1964, now stands at 81-40-13 overall in favor of Michigan.
The Maize and Blue will travel to Plymouth, Michigan, next weekend to face off in an exhibition contest against the USA Hockey National Team Development U-18 team. Michigan takes on the U.S. NTDP U-18 Team for the 18th time in as many seasons, holding a 15-2-0 record all-time in the series. This will be the first time the Wolverines have played against the development team outside of Yost Ice Arena, and their first game at USA Hockey Arena -- the former home of the Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Plymouth Whalers.
The NTDP has produced 47 Michigan players over the years, including juniors Nicholas Boka and Brendan Warren; sophomores Will Lockwood, Griffin Luce, Luke Martin, Nick Pastujov and James Sanchez; and freshmen Quinn Hughes, Josh Norris and Nick Pastujov.
