
Fahey Sweeps Titles at Michigan Invitational

» Michigan closed the three-day event by winning one doubles match against Arizona State and five singles matches against Tennessee.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Kate Fahey of the University of Michigan women's tennis team swept the singles and doubles titles as the Michigan Invitational concluded on Monday (Jan. 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan faced Arizona State in doubles and Tennessee in singles on the final day of the three-day event.
The No. 4-ranked doubles duo of Fahey and junior Alex Najarian won the doubles title with a 3-0 mark at No. 1. The pair broke Arizona State's Savannah Slaysman and Kelley Anderson for a 5-3 lead, sending Fahey back to serve. The sophomore held and won the match for U-M, 6-3, sealing it with an ace up the middle.
In singles action, Najarian was first off court for the Maize and Blue with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Eve Repic of Tennessee. Najarian raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and never looked back in wrapping up her third singles victory of the weekend.
Sophomore Brienne Minor grabbed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sadie Hammond, taking control midway through the second set. Minor won the final three games, breaking Hammond in the final game for her third victory of the weekend.
Fahey was next off court for U-M, wrapping up the singles title with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Brittany Lindl. Fahey fell down a break in the early going of the second set but got back on serve at 4-4. Fahey and Lindl exchanged breaks later in the set before Fahey held in the final game for the 7-5 win.
Freshman Chiara Lommer won her second match of the invitational today, dispatching of Ariadna Riley in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lommer raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and won 6-3 to force a third. Neither player could hold serve in the final set, but Lommer took control with a 5-3 lead. Riley held serve in the next game, but Lommer came through on her serve to seal the win.
Junior Mira Ruder-Hook completed the day for Michigan with a three-set win over Gabby Schuck. Ruder-Hook won the first set and mounted a furious comeback in the second before falling short, 7-5. Ruder-Hook jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the third but dropped two straight games to get back on serve at 3-3. She broke and then held serve for a 5-3 lead before serving out the match in her next service game in a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
The Wolverines will now shift to dual-match play, hosting Denver, Mississippi State and Syracuse in the ITA Kick-Off in two weeks (Jan. 28-29).
