• Big Ten Tournament: Quarterfinals
In its third year as a varsity program under head coach Jennifer Ulehla, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team's roster consisted of 18 juniors, 11 sophomores and 13 freshmen. The Wolverines finished the season with a 6-12 record, equaling the most wins in the program's three seasons.
Michigan jumped out to its best start in program history, starting the season 4-2, with both losses coming by just one goal each, including a 12-11 loss at No. 7 Florida in the final seconds of the game. The Wolverines went 0-5 in Big Ten play, in an extremely competitive conference that saw two teams advance to the national semifinals.
Despite many of the program's "firsts" occurring in the first two seasons, the trend continued in 2016, as junior Jess Angerman became the first player in program history to reach 100 career points. Fellow juniors Anna Schueler and Kim Coughlan joined Angerman in the 100-point club later in the season. Overall, Coughlan led the team in points in 2016, with 41 points, on 36 goals and five assists.
Under Ulehla's guidance, juniors Kim Coughlan and Madeline Dion became the first players in program history to be named to the All-Big Ten Team, and Coughlan was also named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
Team Highlights
• Michigan selected captains for the first time in program history, electing juniors Jess Angerman, Tess Korten, Margaret Metzger and Anna Schueler to lead the 2016 team.
• Michigan finished second in the Big Ten in caused turnovers per game, averaging 10.1 per outing. Juniors Kelly Kubach and Madeline Dion caused 1.44 and 1.39 turnovers per game, respectively, to lead the Maize and Blue.
• Michigan's six wins are the most in the season for the young Wolverine program.
• On April 2, the Michigan men's and women's lacrosse teams hosted the second annual Game for Change at Michigan Stadium. The two programs, in collaboration with the One Love Foundation, have joined together over the past two years to "Unite against Relationship Violence."
Individual Highlights
• During the 2016 season, three different players joined the 100-career point club, marking the first Wolverines in program history to do so. Junior Jess Angerman became the first player in program history to reach 100 career points with a four-goal performance against Oregon on Feb. 19. Junior Anna Schueler joined Angerman in the 100-point club with her two-goal one-assist performance at High Point on March 13. Fellow junior Kim Coughlan reached the milestone in the final game of the 2016 season, netting two goals in the Big Ten quarterfinals against Northwestern on May 5, to hit 100 points exactly. Angerman and Schueler finished the season with 122 and 117 career points, respectively.
• Juniors Kim Coughlan and Madeline Dion became the first players in program history to be named to the All-Big Ten Team. Coughlan led the team with 41 points, on 36 goals and five assists, including 14 goals and one assist in five Big Ten games. Dion, a defensive-midfielder, finished the season with 25 caused turnovers, which ranked fourth in the Big Ten, as well as 21 ground balls, 11 draw controls and three goals.
• Junior Tess Korten was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after a five-goal performance against Canisius, which tied a program record for goals in a game.
• Freshman goalie Mira Shane earned the start in U-M's season opener against Central Michigan, making seven saves while not allowing a single goal, en route to being named Big Ten Freshman and Defensive Player of the Week.
