TULSA, Okla. -- Senior Ronit Yurovsky of the University of Michigan women's tennis team rallied from dropping the first set to take a three-set win in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Wednesday afternoon (May 25) at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Yurovsky quickly fell behind in the match against LSU's Joana Vale Costa, dropping the first set (6-1). She answered in the second set, going up 5-4 after breaking at love. She served out the set in the ensuing game to set up a third set.
The Wolverine captain broke on a deuce point to start the third and took a 2-0 lead, before Vale Costa returned the favor with two straight games to knot the third at 2-2. The two players kept trading breaks, as Yurovsky went up a break at 3-2 but could not hold serve in her next game to tie the set yet again at 3-3. The breaks continued until Yurovsky finally held again for a 5-3 advantage. She served out the match in the next game, knocking off Vale Costa for the second time this season in a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
Freshman Brienne Minor saw her singles season come to an end with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to No. 8 Sinead Lohan of Miami. The two faced each other during Michigan' 4-3 NCAA Tournament win just six days ago.
Minor was broken at 4-2 in the first set as Lohan took a 6-3 first-set win. The two players stayed on serve throughout the second until Minor was broken at 5-4. Lohan served out the match in the next game to advance to the second round.
Minor finishes the singles portion of her freshman season with a 36-10 record, ranking second on the single-season wins list.
Minor and sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook will compete tomorrow (Thursday, May 26) in the doubles tournament, with Yurovsky playing her second-round match tomorrow as well.
