Brian Archer is a junior (time flies, huh?) faceoff man for the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team. In his third year of scribing excellence in 'Under the Arch,' with this very installment serving as his 'Blogiversary' for his 10th installment. Archer, a Brighton, Michigan, native, provides periodic commentary, musings and observations from an inside perspective on Team Five. The program can also neither confirm nor deny that he writes his installments under the actual arch in the Diag on campus, as moped parking can be tricky in the surrounding area.
Although this season didn't finish how we would have liked, there were absolutely no regrets looking back. We had some very close games in Big Ten play that would have allowed us to keep our season going but we came up just short. This kind of ending is never the one you'd want for such a special senior class that did so much for our program. Our seniors paved the way and endured a lot so we could set our team in the right direction of winning championships.
We will forever be grateful for the seniors teaching us:
- Everyone can contribute to the team's mission, especially the freshmen. All voices need to be heard in order to reach our goals and carry out our core values.
- Bonding off the field is just as important as working hard on the field. Team grill outs, movies and get-togethers are examples of how the seniors united our team.
- At the end of the day we play for each other. When the practices get tough, remember that the team has your back.
- There's no better team to play for in the world than Michigan.
- When facing injuries, we have the guys that can step up.
A few things we'd also like to credit the seniors for:
- Making it completely acceptable to wear an animal onesie on a football Saturday.
- Encouraging us to take part in the incredible experience that is "Spring Term."
- Giving David Joseph a group of friends to hang out with during his 5th year.
- Getting to know "Saint Nicholas."
- Exposing us to the beauty of the southern omelet at Benny's on a Sunday morning.
Our seniors plan on going to work in a variety of industries from Wall Street to The Loop -- and from North Carolina to the Bahamas -- each one of them will be doing something amazing. They've set a tradition at Michigan of a tightly knit team with a common goal. They've shown us how to work hard on the field and in the class room. They've set Michigan men's lacrosse on the right track. Now it's Team Six's job to take it to the next level.
See you in the fall.
