INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Using a three-under 69 from sophomore Megan Kim along with a two-under 70 from junior Grace Choi, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a three-under 285 team tally today (Friday, April 22) and positioned itself tied for third after day one of the Big Ten Championships being played at the Fort Golf Course.
"You certainly cannot win the tournament on the first day, however, we are very pleased with the position we have put ourselves in heading into the weekend," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Megan (Kim), Grace (Choi), Cat (Peters) and Emily (White) hung tough all day. They all made some solid up and downs that kept their momentum going. We are excited for what the weekend will bring and will be ready to compete."
Paired with Michigan and Minnesota for the opening round of the conference tournament, the Wolverines were able to rely on Kim's second sub-par round of the season (69, -3) and Choi's sixth (70, -2) to pace the opening 18 holes. With an even-par 72 from senior Catherine Peters, U-M posted its fifth sub-par team tally (285,-3) and moved among the top three at the championship event. The Wolverines are just two shots back of first-day leader Purdue (283, -5) and a shot back of Northwestern (284, -4).
Kim helped the Wolverines get off to a solid start, playing her front-side nine at three under after birdieing Nos. 1, 5 and 6 to go along with her six pars. Opening her back-nine with five straight pars she recorded her first blemish bogeying the par 4, 15th hole. Kim erased it quickly with a birdie on the par 5, 15th hole as she finished the round three under and is tied for third individually.
"Megan played almost flawless golf," said Dowling. "She gave herself plenty of birdie opportunities and also had some key up and downs midway through her round that kept her under par."
"I played pretty solid today and did not have any big mistakes," said Kim. "This course offers really good birdie opportunities on par 5s, and I took advantage of those. I was having some issues with my putting in the past couple of tournaments, but I worked really hard on it this past week, and it's cool to see them now start to roll in."
After one of her two bogeys were erased by a birdie, Choi closed her front side at one over. Making the turn, she mirrored Kim's opening nine as Choi finished three-under on the backside, sprinkling birdies on Nos. 10, 14, 18 around six pars. With her 70, she cracked into the top 10 as she is tied for 10th.
Playing in her fourth straight Big Ten Tournament, Peters used two birdies to wipe out two bogeys to close with an even-par 72 and sit tied for 23rd. Sophomore Emily White recorded U-M's fourth counting score with her two-over 74 (tied for 35th), while sophomore Kathy Lim's 77 puts her tied for 61st. In her first conference championship, freshman Elodie Van Dievoet is tied for 68th after her opening 78.
With 36 holes remaining, the Wolverines will be paired with Indiana and Rutgers for the second round. The B1G trio of teams will begin off the front side starting at 8:48 a.m.
