HORMIGUEROS, Puerto Rico -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team marked a team score of 416.050 and captured team and individual event titles on five events en route to defeating the Puerto Rican National team and 17th-ranked Temple Owls Saturday (March 5) at Calle Julio Perez Irizarry.
U-M (3-8) collected a 69.450 on floor exercise, led by freshman Matthew Beck's second-place 14.25. A 70.850 showed on still rings that was led by a 1-2 finish from freshman Anthony McCallum (14.55), while senior Colin Mahar took second with the same score due to the lower difficulty level.
With 74.440 on vault as a team, the Wolverines swept the top four spots. The contingent was led by freshman Emyre Cole with a 15.15, followed by junior Anthony Stefanelli (15.15), redshirt senior Michael Strathern (15.05) and Dmitri Belanovski (14.70).
McCallum's second event title came on parallel bars with a 14.15, while Cole took second with a 13.90 as the Maize and Blue strung together a 68.950 on the apparatus. Belanovski closed out the night and led U-M with a 14.55, as the Kurt Golder-led group scored a 68.95.
With the conclusion of the Spring Break trip, U-M returns to Big Ten Conference competition Saturday (March 12) at Illinois at 5 p.m. CST.
