Michigan Falls in Close Match at Texas

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped the doubles point and closed to within 3-2 with two matches left on court, but Texas came away with a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon (March 5) at the Whitaker Tennis Courts.
Michigan lost the doubles point, falling at No. 1 and winning at No. 2 behind sophomores Alex Najarian and Mira Ruder-Hook. At No. 3, freshman Teona Velehorschi and junior Sara Remynse forced a tiebreaker at No. 3 as the deciding match. Texas took the breaker, however, 7-2, to secure the match's first point.
Texas extended its lead to 3-0 with a straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 1.
Michigan got on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win from Velehorschi at No. 6, closing the gap to 3-1 in favor of the Longhorns.
Najarian followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win at No. 4 to bring Michigan back within a point, 3-2, with two matches remaining on court.
Freshman Kate Fahey and Ruder-Hook each won their first sets, with Fahey in the second and Ruder-Hook in the third when Najarian won.
Michigan needed both wins in the remaining matches, but Texas got the deciding fourth point from a three-set win at No. 3.
Following the clinching point, Fahey came away with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win at No. 2 as Michigan fell by one point, 4-3.
U-M continues its time away from the Varsity Tennis Center next Saturday (March 12), playing at Virginia at noon.
