ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team outscored Bucknell, 33-14, in the fourth quarter to knock off the visiting Bison, 95-72, in the second round of the WNIT on Saturday afternoon (March 19) inside Crisler Center.
U-M scored the first five points of the fourth quarter on a triple from sophomore Katelynn Flaherty and a layup from freshman Hallie Thome for a 67-58 lead. Senior Madison Ristovski nailed a jumper from the free throw line with 7:36 remaining, as Michigan called timeout with a 71-63 lead.
Back-to-back triples from junior Siera Thompson and Flaherty put Michigan on top, 77-65 with 6:33 to go. The teams traded baskets until a pull up jumper at the 3:43 mark from freshman Nicole Munger ignited a 14-3 game-ending run for the Wolverines.
Thome led the Wolverines with 24 points on 11-for-15 shooting to go with five rebounds and four blocks in 24 minutes. Thompson came through with her first 20-point game of the season, going for 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting while handing out five assists. Ristovski had 16 points and seven rebounds, with Flaherty scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. Michigan shot 57.1 percent (40-for-70) from the floor and held a 36-27 advantage on the glass.
Michigan opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run behind four points from Ristovski and a nifty right layup from Flaherty as Bucknell called timeout just 2:33 into the frame. Flaherty to Thome in transition gave Michigan its first double-figure lead of the day, 54-44, with 5:39 left in the third. The Bison chipped away at the lead, entering the fourth quarter down by just four, 62-58.
Michigan took a nine-point lead, 35-26, on a senior Kelsey Mitchell layup from Flaherty with 8:13 on the second-quarter clock. Bucknell responded with a 10-2 run to bring the Bison back within a point, 37-36, with 4:44 left before the half. Following the media timeout with 4:13 on the clock, Michigan got back-to-back baskets from Ristovski and Thompson to push its lead back to five and force a Bucknell timeout at the 3:08 mark.
The Maize and Blue hit the half with a 44-42 lead, spearheaded by 15 points from Thompson and nine from Thome. Michigan shot 55.9 percent (19-for-34) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and held a 16-13 advantage on the glass.
Michigan will host San Diego on Tuesday night (March 22, 7 p.m.) in the third round of the WNIT. [ Ticket Information ]
